Fire Department

The Elkton Fire Department (EFD) is comprised of 6 firefighters at one central station with four trucks, two pumpers, one tanker, and one brush truck.  The Elkton Fire Department has an ISO rating of 5 which is excellent for a Volunteer Fire Dept.  However, we are in the process of conducting a ‘Fire Study’ to determine if we can bring the rating even lower which will benefit  all residents because the lower the ISO rating, the cheaper the Home Owners Insurance.  The EFD also sells Fire Contracts to residents outside the city limits within a 5-mile radius which also helps to lower the homeowners insurance.

The Elkton Fire Department is ‘second-to-none in passion to serve and dedication of each its members.  The primary first due response area consists of 25 square miles and a population 2,500.  The City of Elkton spans 1.5 miles and contains a population of 600+ according to census data.  Therefore, the Elkton Fire Department is responsible for areas outside the city.  Interstate 65 runs through part of the Elkton Fire Department’s 25 square mile footprint as well.  Therefore, Elkton Fire Department is the first responders to any accidents that occur on this portion of I-65.

Each year the Volunteer Firemen sponsor a ‘Fish Fry’ in the Spring, a ‘Chicken Stew’ in the Fall, and a Turkey Shoot in November.  These scheduled events have become a real favorite within the community and are major fund-raisers for the department.
